No Recess, No Vacation By Doug Wrenn November 22, 2007 In an attempt to thwart President Bush from potentially making any recess appointments, Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is manipulating a "pro forma" constitutional strategy by not closing the Senate for more than three consecutive days until it officially reopens on December 3rd. In the interim, Democrat Senators Webb of Virginia, Dorgan of North Dakota and Reed of Rhode Island will open and close the Senate for roughly 30 seconds on intermittent days during what would normally be the Thanksgiving holiday recess for the chamber. Perhaps Senator Reid is onto something here. As long as the building remains open, the Senate is technically "in session," and the US taxpayers are paying for all the wasted utilities to heat and light the huge and nearly empty Capitol building for this partisan power ploy, let's call all the rest of the prima donnas back to work, too. The Democrats promised change when they took over the Congress. "Change" thus far has pretty much been defined as renaming a bunch of post offices. Considering the six digits of salary each Representative and Senator makes annually on the public dole, juxtaposed against their collectively abysmal favorability ratings and gobs of cushy time off with little productivity to show for it, I think Senator Reid has a mostly good idea. Fill those so-called hallowed halls with the other 534 underworked and overpaid career inhabitants and it will be a perfect idea. After all, if the United States Congress can be that obstructive from home, then there is no reason why it cannot be more productive at work, especially during time of war. I don't believe many of our overly extended troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have had much of any recess yet, "Thanksgiving," "pro forma," or otherwise. Doug Wrenn |
