Orwell's Nightmare

I recall almost forty years ago when Vice President Spiro Agnew spoke in Iowa about the total domination of broadcast media by three Leftist corporations. His points were valid: there was no network which could remotely be called conservative, a few network reporters in fact later turned out to be Soviet spies, the networks never criticized the news reporting of their "rival" networks, and survey after survey showed that the overwhelming majority of newsmen were liberals who voted Democrat.

Skip forward thirty-eight years. One cable news network, Fox, actually presents a conservative point of view much of the time (albeit Fox nearly always has a balancing of viewpoints, something distinct from CBS News of forty years ago, whose commentators were all Leftists.) Today there is much more competition - MSNBC, CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS and (as always) the slavishly Leftist PBS. Against all of these Leftist networks, there is one single network that is not Leftist.

So what do Democrats do? Unlike Republicans, who for the last forty years have appeared before hostile broadcast television reporting without complaint, Democrats cannot even stand to have a single instance of real confrontation with real issues. They boycott Fox. Moreover, the Left is doing something much more sinister.

More and more the Left is threatening censorship of talk radio under the Fairness Doctrine (the doctrine that was supposed to have applied to Leftist television during the years that it was in effect, but which never protected the rights of conservatives to be heard at all.) In 1969, Republicans did not talk about suppressing broadcast television, but simply asked the networks to stop egregious lies, like in the CBS documentary, Hunger in America, or the ABC documentary right before the 1972 election that was chocked full of errors, all favoring the rhetoric of George McGovern, or in the CBS documentary, The Selling of the Pentagon, in which answers to question A were switched in editing to appear as answers to question B.

And now what is the Left trying to do? Attack sponsors to Rush Limbaugh or other conservative talk radio programs. Harass station owners with complaints. In short, use coercion to silence voices which disagree with them. The San Francisco City Council almost sought to prosecute Michael Savage for hate speech simply for expressing his political views.

We all know by now that the thugs of academia and even public schools have compelled students to espouse politically correct (i.e. Leftist) views in essays, to write letters to President Bush to end the war in Iraq, and other forms of thought control. While failing to teach students anything, these professors have proven adept at draining the ability to think rationally or to understand even the rudiments of history, rendering them incapable to escaping from the madness of Leftism.

More and more the Left, which once railed against the "establishment" and "corporate America" has simply gained control of all the institutions of raw power in our nation and are using that power to suppress as brutally as our civilized society allows all dissenting voices and all opposing points of view. Why do they do this? The flip-flops and lies make any pretense at sincere ideology fall flat. The hypocrisy of Hollywood high-flyers who hoot about global warming reveals something other than care about our planet. All issues, all "victims," all positions are sought for precisely one reason: power.

The indifference of the Left to the real patriarchy which would follow the collapse of democracy in Afghanistan and Iraq or the growing menace to women in Europe and soon in America from Moslem gangs shows no genuine concern for women. The plantation mentality towards blacks has long been quietly understood by all. Schools that teach nothing but sex and drugs reveal a total indifference to children.

No, power for the sake of power is all that motivates the Left. We conservatives and other normal people stand in the way of that power, so good people like Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter are persecuted and threatened just like the Leftist Nazis of pre-war Germany tried to disrupt and harass their opponents. There is a battle today, and it is not a battle against "Islam-Fascism" - a battle that we can easily win, with political will. Indeed, the Left will not let us lose that, and it is not these enemies that we need to fear. The battle is for the soul of America, and if we lose, then we will have Orwell's Nightmare.
