Fleischmann Campaign Apologizes to Judy Aron and Suspends Campaign Coordinator For Immediate Release July 28, 2006 West Hartford CT - Judy Aron, the Republican candidate attempting to unseat six term incumbent Andrew Fleischmann for the 18th State House District has received a personal apology via telephone from Representative Andrew Fleischmann, saying that he was very sorry for what his campaign coordinator, Alex Kaplan, had written in an email to Ms. Aron. Mr. Kaplan had sent an email to Ms. Aron "anonymously", which read in part as follows: "Are you insane? You are running against Andy Fleischmann and you think you have a viable chance of winning this election? For the fact alone that you are crazy enough to homeschool your kids and 98% of this town sends their kids to private and public schools, you will not have any shot at winning. Enroll them in school with other kids or they will be socially inept when they get to college. " The email message had indicated the sender as "Alex Kaplan" with an email address from George Washington University, so it was not entirely anonymous. She later found out that Mr. Kaplan was a campaign coordinator for Representative Fleischmann. Ms. Aron said, "Ordinarily, something like this wouldn't bother me, and it was even laughable, but the fact that it came from a campaign leader in Fleischmann's camp was disappointing. It saddened me to find out that a college educated young man in a position of campaign leadership would send such an unprovoked message." In Mr. Fleischmann's phone call to Ms. Aron he said that he chastised Mr. Kaplan for such an obnoxious act and that Mr. Kaplan would be suspended from working on Mr. Fleischmann's campaign. He said that he had no knowledge of the incident until it was brought to his attention. Ms. Aron has graciously accepted this apology and hopes that this campaign will remain civil and bring out meaningful discussion of the important issues facing the voters of the 18th District. They both concurred that one can disagree on the issues without being disagreeable. Additionally, Mr. Kaplan has sent a personal letter of apology to Ms. Aron's home, acknowledging his error in judgment. Ms. Aron accepts this apology as well, and hopes that Mr. Kaplan has learned a lesson in civility and hopes that he also takes the time to learn more about the choices parents have in educating their children.
