Andy Fleischmann's Campaign Co-ordinator Should be Fired

By Judy Aron

July 20, 2006

Dear Editor,

The campaign of Judy Aron for State Representative in the 18th District has recently received this e-mail from campaign co-ordinator for her opponent Andrew Fleischmann's campaign, Alex Kaplan. It was sent from his email address at George Washington University (akap@gwu.edu).

It read as follows:

"Are you insane? You are running against Andy Fleischmann and you think you have a viable chance of winning this election? For the fact alone that you are crazy enough to homeschool your kids and 98% of this town sends their kids to private and public schools, you will not have any shot at winning. Enroll them in school with other kids or they will be socially inept when they get to college. Just out of curiosity.what do you think your chances are? Ballpark percentage? - A concerned member of the 18th district "

It might be laughable if it weren't so indicative of a big problem facing the way we approach civil discourse. Is this is the caliber of people who are running Mr. Fleischmann's campaign? If so, then the voters need to know this. Mr. Kaplan ought to be fired from his campaign position immediately and Mr. Fleischmann needs to promptly apologize to Ms. Aron for such a tasteless and base assault from his staff. Personal attacks, such as calling me insane and crazy, are not exactly in the spirit of Democracy which Mr. Fleischmann constantly espouses. One would think that a direct representative of Fleischmann's campaign would (and should) refrain from sending such sophomoric comments via email.

I would like your readers to know that I took the time to answer quite civilly to Mr. Kaplan. While Mr. Kaplan has a right to his own opinions, I do not expect that Mr. Fleischmann's campaign co-ordinators would send such an email without so much as a provocation. And even if he was not sending it to me as a representative of the Fleischmann campaign, is this the arrogance and uncivil tone that this campaign will be waging with people like this at the helm? I hope not, and I hope that Mr. Fleischmann will show that he will not tolerate this behavior from a member of his team.
